Allahabad HC Alarmed by 1.08 Lakh Missing Persons in UP, Slams Police Inaction
- •The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court took suo motu cognisance of over 1.08 lakh missing persons cases in Uttar Pradesh.
- •The court registered a PIL after noting that police action was initiated in only about 9,700 cases out of 1,08,300 missing complaints between January 1, 2024, and January 18, 2026.
- •Justices Abdul Moin and Babita Rani described the figures as "shocking" and expressed serious concern over the authorities' "lethargic attitude".
- •The court's observation came during a criminal writ petition filed by Vikrama Prasad, whose son went missing in July 2024.
- •The bench sought a detailed affidavit from the additional chief secretary (home) and directed the matter to be listed for hearing on February 5.
