Banks' MFI Portfolio Shrinks 40% in Q3FY26, Sharpest Among Lenders
•
Banks' microfinance portfolio outstanding contracted by 40% year-on-year to Rs 65,687 crore in Q3FY26, the sharpest fall among all lenders.
•
The overall MFI industry portfolio was down 22% year-on-year, driven by asset quality stress, tighter underwriting, and liquidity issues.
•
Banks' market share in MFI slipped to 25% from 35%, while NBFC-MFIs' share rose to 44% and they now lead new sourcing.
•
Despite portfolio contraction, fresh disbursements grew 6% year-on-year to Rs 63,348 crore in Oct-Dec 2025, with NBFC-MFIs increasing loans disbursed.
•
Bihar remains the largest microfinance state; Karnataka saw the highest portfolio shrinkage (34%) due to regulatory concerns.
