Opposition MP Lori Idlout defected from the New Democratic Party to Prime Minister Mark Carney's Liberals, bringing their total to 170 seats.

The Liberals need 172 seats for a majority government, which would allow them to pass any bill without opposition support.
•
Special elections are scheduled for April 13 in three districts; winning two of these would secure the needed majority.
•
Three Conservative MPs (Chris d’Entremont, Michael Ma, Matt Jeneroux) also defected to Carney’s Liberals in recent months.

Carney, who replaced Justin Trudeau in 2025, is popular for his centrist approach and gained international prominence after his Davos speech.
