Delhi HC Upholds Sweet Shop Owner's Conviction for Sewer Pollution

• The Delhi High Court affirmed the conviction of a sweet shop owner for discharging untreated effluent into the public sewer.
• Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma emphasized that even small establishments contribute significantly to pollution and cannot be absolved due to their size.
• The sweet shop, M/s Kanwarji Raj Kumar in Chandni Chowk, was found operating without proper effluent treatment facilities since June 2000.
• The court set aside the two-year imprisonment sentence due to the owner's age and the offense dating back to 2000, and changes in the Water Act.
• The owner was directed to pay an additional fine of Rs 10 lakh to DPCC and plant 100 trees in or around Chandni Chowk.
