EU Bolsters Red Sea Security: Naval Missions Expand Mandates Amid Threats
•The European Council updated mandates for EUNAVFOR ASPIDES and EUNAVFOR ATALANTA to strengthen maritime security and safeguard global trade routes.
•ASPIDES, launched in February 2024, will now collect information on suspicious activities targeting critical submarine infrastructure, train Djiboutian maritime forces, and cooperate with the Yemeni Coast Guard.
•ATALANTA will shift priorities, suspending monitoring of illicit charcoal trade but continuing to track arms trafficking, narcotics flows, and illegal fishing.
•ATALANTA will also monitor and share intelligence on threats to critical submarine infrastructure, aligning with broader EU maritime security efforts.
•Both missions, extended until February 2027, are part of the EU’s integrated approach to maritime security and regional stability.
