India Nominates Meghalaya's Living Root Bridges for UNESCO World Heritage Status
•India has nominated 'Jingkieng Jri/ Lyu Charai Cultural Landscape', the Living Root Bridges of Meghalaya, for UNESCO World Heritage List for the 2026-27 cycle.
•A proposal for 'Ancient Buddhist Site, Sarnath' in Uttar Pradesh has also been sent for the 2025-26 cycle.
•Locally known as Jingkieng Jri, these Ficus-based bridges are rural connectivity solutions grown by indigenous Khasi tribal communities.
•The bridges signify a profound harmony between humans and nature, demonstrating exceptional ingenuity and resilience.
•India currently has 44 UNESCO sites: 36 cultural, 7 natural, and 1 mixed category.
