Kerala to Fund Half of Sabari Rail Project Cost, Ending 25-Year Delay

  • Kerala government will bear 50% of the Angamaly-Erumely Sabari railway project cost, amounting to Rs 1,900 crore.
  • The decision was made by the state cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, with funding through KIIFB.
  • The 110-km railway line, first proposed in 1997-98, aims to benefit Sabarimala pilgrims and boost economic activity in Ernakulam, Idukki, and Pathanamthitta districts.
  • The project, stalled for over 25 years due to land acquisition and funding issues, now has a revised cost of Rs 3,800.9 crore.
  • Plans include extending the corridor to Vizhinjam International Port, linking hill regions and boosting Kerala's economy.
