North Sikkim Tourism Revives as Toong-Naga Road Reopens; Lachen Access Soon

  • Tourism in North Sikkim has returned to normal after the reopening of the Toong-Naga Road, with approximately 400 tourist vehicles visiting Lachung daily.
  • The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is constructing a bridge over the Taram Chu River, expected to be completed by early February, which will reopen tourist access to Lachen.
  • 125 families from Rel, Naga, and Toong wards, affected by the October 2023 Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF), will be relocated to Upper Bojoghari in Gangtok.
  • Land ownership documents will be distributed on February 8, enabling the construction of permanent houses for the displaced families.
  • The GLOF disaster caused extensive damage to roads, bridges, and settlements in North Sikkim, with the Indian Army providing crucial support for evacuation, medical aid, and road restoration.

Why It Matters: North Sikkim's tourism is recovering with road reopenings and rehabilitation efforts post-GLOF disaster.
