Punjab, Haryana CMs to Discuss SYL Canal Dispute on Jan 27

  • Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann and Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini will meet on January 27 in Chandigarh to discuss the long-pending Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal issue.
  • The SYL canal dispute, concerning water sharing from the Ravi and Beas rivers, has been a contentious issue between the two states for decades.
  • The Supreme Court has repeatedly directed both states to cooperate with the Centre for an amicable solution, with the latest directive in May.
  • Punjab has not completed its 122 km portion of the 214 km canal, arguing it has no surplus water, while Haryana has completed its 92 km section and demands its share.
  • Punjab CM Mann has proposed scrapping the SYL project, suggesting a Yamuna Sutlej Link (YSL) canal to bring water from Ganga and Yamuna to Punjab, citing the dried-up Sutlej river.

Why It Matters: Punjab and Haryana CMs will meet to address the decades-old SYL canal water dispute.
