SC to Hear Digital Arrest Victims' Case Next Week Amid Rising Scams
•The Supreme Court will hear a suo motu case next week concerning victims of "digital arrest," a cybercrime where fraudsters impersonate officials to extort money.
•The SC previously described digital fraud, which siphoned over Rs 54,000 crore, as "robbery" and directed the Centre to draft a Standard Operating Procedure (SoP).
•Attorney General R Venkataramani informed the bench of progress and will submit a status report, leading the court to list the matter for next week.
•The apex court has directed CBI to identify digital arrest cases, asked Gujarat and Delhi to sanction probes, and urged RBI and DoT to develop a compensation framework.
•The Ministry of Home Affairs is mandated to adopt RBI's drafted SoP, which includes provisions for temporary debit holds by banks to prevent cyber-enabled frauds.
