The Met's 'Household Gods' Exhibition Explores Hindu Devotional Prints
•The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) in New York is hosting 'Household Gods: Hindu Devotional Prints, 1860–1930', featuring over 100 prints of Hindu Gods.
•The exhibition, running from January 2024 to June 27, 2027, showcases works from The Met's collection, focusing on acquisitions from the past decade.
•It's the first encyclopedic exhibition of chromolithographic prints from pioneering studios in Calcutta, Poona, and Bombay, crucial for Indian religious identity during the Independence movement.
•New lithographic printing technologies from Europe made inexpensive chromo-lithographic prints accessible, allowing even humble homes to afford colorful icons.
•Coinciding with the exhibition, The Met will host a lecture on March 20 by Richard Davis, with opening remarks by India’s Consul General Binaya Pradhan.
