UK Overhauls Asylum System: Refugee Status Now Temporary, Subject to 30-Month Review
•UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced that refugee status will become temporary, subject to review every 30 months for all adult asylum claimants starting Monday.
•The reform, inspired by Denmark's approach, aims to reduce asylum claims and deter dangerous journeys, while still offering sanctuary to those fleeing persecution.
•Under the new system, protection will be renewed only for refugees still facing danger in their home country; others whose country is deemed safe will be expected to return.
•Previously, refugees received five years of protection, near-automatic permanent settlement, and family reunification, which the Home Office identified as a 'pull-factor'.
•Refugees can apply for new work and study visas to integrate and contribute, and new safe and legal routes, including community sponsorship, will be established.
