UK Overhauls Asylum System: Refugee Status Now Temporary, Subject to 30-Month Review

• Under the new system, protection will be renewed only for refugees still facing danger in their home country; others whose country is deemed safe will be expected to return.
• Previously, refugees received five years of protection, near-automatic permanent settlement, and family reunification, which the Home Office identified as a 'pull-factor'.
• Refugees can apply for new work and study visas to integrate and contribute, and new safe and legal routes, including community sponsorship, will be established.
