Gavaskar scored two crucial half-centuries (65 & 67*) in his debut match, leading India to a 7-wicket victory.

This marked India's first-ever Test win in the West Indies, set up by Bishan Singh Bedi and Erapalli Prasanna's bowling.

Gavaskar went on to score a record 774 runs with four centuries in his debut series, helping India win their first Caribbean series 1-0.
•
His series total of 774 runs is an Indian record, second only to Sir Don Bradman's 974 runs in a Test series.
