No ASI Protected Sites Missing, Government Informs Parliament

  • The government informed Parliament that none of the 3,686 sites under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) are untraceable at present.
  • Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat stated that instances of unauthorized constructions around centrally protected monuments have been identified.
  • Action has been taken against illegal constructions, including issuing notices, stopping work, and demolishing structures, as per the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act.
  • The AMASR Act, 1958, protects 3,686 monuments and sites across the country, with notifications available in the public domain.
  • Only 143 out of 3,686 protected monuments and sites have an entry fee, and conservation is a continuous process for all.
