Mumbai High Court: Equal Pay for Gram Panchayat Employees Merged into Corporations

Mumbai High Court rules Gram Panchayat employees merged into Municipal Corporations are entitled to equal pay for equal work.
•
The court stated that paying such employees less is discrimination and violates Articles 14 and 16 of the Constitution.
•
The verdict came on a writ petition filed by 28 employees of the Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation.
•
Employees, including sanitation workers, clerks, and peons, argued they performed similar work but received only minimum wages.
•
The court ordered the Municipal Corporation to pay regular wages and 8% interest on arrears within four weeks.
