Gas Safety: The Secret Behind LPG's Pungent Smell & What To Do In A Leak
- •LPG is naturally odorless; 'Ethyl Mercaptan' is added at refinery level for safety, giving it a pungent, rotten-egg smell.
- •In case of a gas leak, immediately turn off the regulator and stove knobs, then open all windows and doors for ventilation.
- •Crucially, do NOT touch electrical switches (on or off) as the spark can ignite gas and cause an explosion.
- •Avoid all flammable items like matchsticks, lighters, or making phone calls inside the affected area.
- •Manager Srinivas advises checking cylinder seals, changing gas tubes every two years, using ISI-marked products, and turning off the regulator nightly.
Why It Matters: LPG's added smell prevents explosions; follow strict safety steps during a leak to avoid disaster.
