India to Revamp Quarterly GDP Calculation with GST, e-Vahan Data

  • India's quarterly GDP calculations will be revamped to be more granular and less volatile.
  • The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) is reviewing the methodology for quarterly GDP compilation.
  • New high-frequency administrative datasets like GST filings, e-Vahan vehicle registrations, and natural gas consumption will be integrated.
  • The current benchmark–indicator approach will be replaced with proportional benchmarking for smoother growth trajectories and fewer revisions.
  • The revised quarterly GDP series, with FY23 as the base year, is expected to be released in February 2026.

Why It Matters: India is overhauling its quarterly GDP methodology using high-frequency data for more accurate estimates.
