India's Fertilizer Imports Decline, But Key Nutrient Reliance Remains High

India's fertilizer import dependence has eased due to increased domestic urea production, but vulnerabilities persist.
•
The country heavily relies on imported phosphatic and potassic nutrients crucial for soil fertility and crop yields.
•
Fertilizer consumption rose to 60.1 million tonnes in 2023-24, with domestic production increasing to 50.3 million tonnes.
•
Urea imports account for 19.7% of consumption, but DAP and muriate of potash have much higher import reliance.
•
Import dependence is concentrated geographically, with a significant share from the Strait of Hormuz region, posing geopolitical risks.
