50 MBBS Students Stranded as Vaishno Devi Medical College Loses Approval
- •50 MBBS students at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME) are in limbo after the National Medical Commission (NMC) withdrew permission for its MBBS course.
- •The Jammu and Kashmir Board of Professional Entrance Examination (JKBOPEE) refused to conduct new counseling, stating it lacks authority and cannot go beyond the MCC schedule.
- •JKBOPEE has advised the J&K government to admit the stranded students to supernumerary seats in other medical colleges "at its own level" in consultation with NMC.
- •NMC cited infrastructure and functioning deficiencies for withdrawing permission, but the decision followed protests by right-wing groups regarding the demography of students (44 out of 50 were Muslim).
- •The NMC's withdrawal of permission came months after an initial approval, following a sudden inspection that found serious deficiencies in faculty and clinical material.
Why It Matters: 50 MBBS students are left without a college after SMVDIME's permission was revoked, with authorities passing responsibility.
