India's Graduate Unemployment Soars: 67% of Youth Jobless, Skills Gap a Key Factor
•Unemployment among Indian graduates has more than doubled, with 67% of youth aged 20-29 being jobless in 2023, up from 32% in 2004.
•The number of unemployed graduates reached 1.1 crore in 2023, a significant rise from 30 lakh in 2004, as per an Azim Premji University report.
•While 50 lakh new graduates entered the workforce annually between 2004-2023, only 28 lakh found jobs, with just 17 lakh securing regular salaried positions.
•A 'skill gap' is identified as a major challenge, with many graduates lacking the necessary skills and experience demanded by companies.
•The report also highlights the high cost of higher education, a slowdown in graduate earnings growth post-2017, and an increasing trend of youth dropping out of studies.
