UPSC Topper: IAS, IPS, or IFS? How Service Allocation Works & Who Decides

UPSC service allocation depends on the candidate's Detailed Application Form (DAF) preference and final rank.
•
Securing IAS typically requires a top 80-90 rank for the General category; IFS up to 100-120, IPS up to 250.
•
Even Rank 1 or 2 candidates can choose IPS or IFS if prioritized in their DAF over IAS.
•
IAS, IPS, and IFS officers have distinct roles: district administration, law & order, and international diplomacy, respectively.
•
Initial basic salary is uniform, but IFS officers can earn significantly more due to 'Special Foreign Allowance' when posted abroad.
