Delhi-NCR Air Quality 'Severe': CAQM Reinstates Strictest GRAP-IV Curbs

  • The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has reimposed Stage IV of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across Delhi-NCR due to a sharp increase in pollution levels.
  • Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) surged to 428 by 8 PM on Saturday, entering the 'severe' category, prompting the immediate activation of the strictest curbs.
  • The decision was made proactively by the CAQM Sub-Committee on GRAP to prevent further deterioration of air quality, citing unfavorable weather and lack of pollutant dispersal.
  • GRAP-IV measures, which were previously withdrawn in late December, are now back in effect, building upon existing Stages I, II, and III restrictions.
  • Under GRAP-IV, BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel vehicles are prohibited from plying in Delhi-NCR, except for those providing essential services.

Why It Matters: Delhi-NCR faces 'severe' air quality, leading CAQM to reimpose GRAP-IV curbs, banning older vehicles.
