Opposition moves no-confidence motion against LS Speaker Om Birla despite lacking numbers

  • Opposition MPs have moved a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, alleging partisan behavior and curbing their voices.
  • The motion, signed by 118 MPs, will be taken up on March 9, the first day of the Budget Session's second leg.
  • Birla has decided not to preside over the House until the motion is settled, as per Lok Sabha Secretariat officials.
  • Despite needing 272 votes for removal and the NDA having 293, the Opposition aims to send a political message and highlight grievances.
  • This is not the first time such a motion has been moved; similar attempts were made against Speakers G V Mavalankar, Sardar Hukum Singh, and Balram Jakhar.
