Palamu Tiger Reserve Makes History: First In-House Wild Elephant Treatment in Jharkhand
•Palamu Tiger Reserve's Rescue and Veterinary Management Unit successfully treated an adult male Asian elephant entirely in-house on February 26, 2026.
•The elephant, observed with an abnormal gait and a superficial wound on its right foreleg in Betla National Park, was continuously monitored for five days.
•Despite challenging dense forest terrain, the team scientifically studied the elephant's movements before safely tranquilizing it using chemical immobilization techniques.
•Treatment included antiseptic wound cleaning, debridement, administration of antibiotics, analgesics, anti-inflammatory drugs, and fluid support.
•This achievement marks Jharkhand's first fully in-house successful wild elephant treatment, enhancing the Forest Department's technical self-reliance and emergency response capabilities.
