Earphone Overuse Damages Hearing: Follow 60/60 Rule to Prevent Deafness
•Excessive earphone, AirPod, and headphone use is causing permanent hearing damage, especially among youth, a problem once common only in the elderly.
•Dr. Deepti Sinha of CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, warns that noise-induced hearing loss is slow, painless, and often permanent by the time it's noticed.
•Sensitive hair cells in the ear, damaged by volumes above 85 decibels, do not regenerate, leading to irreversible hearing loss.
•Follow the "60/60 rule": keep earphone volume below 60% and use for no more than 60 minutes at a time, taking 5-10 minute breaks hourly.
•Use noise-canceling earphones to block external noise, avoiding the need to increase volume, and consult an ENT if experiencing ringing or muffled sounds.
