Bundelkhand's Unique Holi: Colors Heal Grief, Reintegrate Families into Society
•
Bundelkhand observes a unique Holi tradition where 'Phag mandalis' visit grieving families to help them overcome sorrow after a death.
•
Families where a death occurred observe a year of mourning, halting all auspicious activities, which resume after Holi.
•
Phag mandalis sing Holi and Kanha songs, apply colors, and convey the message: "What was meant to happen, has happened. Return to life."
•
This age-old tradition, explained by Santosh Pandey, son of Padma Shri late Ram Sahay Pandey, uses dholak, mridang, manjire, and nagare.
•
Panchami, or 'Pachrangi', holds special significance, symbolizing a new beginning with five colors, and marks the end of the mourning period.
