CJI Suryakant Slams Lawyer Over 'Frivolous' PILs, Warns of Heavy Fines

CJI Suryakant questioned a lawyer for drafting "frivolous" PILs, asking if they were prepared "in the middle of the night."

The Supreme Court dismissed a PIL seeking research on 'tamasic' elements in onions and garlic, citing it could hurt Jain sentiments.

Lawyer Sachin Gupta had also filed PILs on alcohol/tobacco regulation, property registration, and classical language guidelines.

The court deemed the petitions vague, poorly drafted, and an unnecessary burden, warning of heavy fines for future frivolous filings.

The bench, including Justice Jayamal Bagchi, advised the petitioner to approach concerned authorities for legitimate issues.
