India learns from US error: S-400 too costly for drones, IAF buys Russian Pantsir-S1

US and Israel used expensive defense systems against cheap Iranian drones, leading to high costs and missile shortages.

India's advanced S-400 defense system is designed for fighter jets and missiles, making it too costly for drones (2.5-16 crore rupees per missile).
•
The IAF is acquiring 13 Pantsir-S1 systems from Russia (6,000 crore rupees deal) to protect S-400s and other installations from drone attacks.
•
Pantsir-S1 offers a cost-effective solution (90 lakh-1.30 crore rupees per missile) with a 20 km range, targeting drones and low-flying aircraft.
•
India currently has three S-400 squadrons and plans to acquire five more, with deliveries of two pending due to the Ukraine war.
