ISRO's Mahabali Engine Achieves 22-Ton Thrust, Boosts LVM3 & Gaganyaan Missions
•
ISRO successfully hot-tested the CE20 cryogenic engine (Mahabali engine) with a 22-ton thrust on March 14, 2026, at Mahendragiri, Tamil Nadu.
•
The upgraded 22-ton thrust (from 19 tons) significantly enhances the LVM3 rocket's capacity to launch heavier satellites into Earth's orbit.
•
A challenging 165-second sea-level test was conducted using a 'Nozzle Protection System' (NPS) to prevent engine damage.
•
This success enables the use of the advanced C32 stage in future LVM3 missions, further increasing payload carrying capacity.
•
The CE20 engine's test is crucial for the Gaganyaan Mission, demonstrating 'ignition margin' and 'boot-strap mode' with indigenous components.
