IIT Kanpur, NCRA Scientists Unveil New Tech to Measure Distant Stars Accurately

• IIT Kanpur and NCRA scientists developed a new, effective method to accurately measure the distance of distant stars, especially pulsars.
• The research, published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, was led by Dr. Ashish Kumar, Prof. Avinash Deshpande, and Prof. Pankaj Jain.
• The technique analyzes radio waves from pulsars, combining 'Dispersion Measure' and 'Scatter Broadening' to overcome limitations of previous methods.
• It can also estimate the speed of stars, offering deeper insights into their movement through space.
• Successfully tested in the Gum Nebula, the method accurately placed the Vela Pulsar inside, correcting previous data.
