New Fish Species 'Butis borgabhimai' Found in Rupnarayan River, Named After Goddess Bargabhima
•
Zoology researchers discovered a new fish species, 'Butis borgabhimai', in the Rupnarayan River near Tamluk, Purba Medinipur.
•
The fish was named after Goddess Bargabhima, the presiding deity of Tamluk, honoring local tradition and the practice of offering fish as 'bhog'.
•
Led by Tanmay Bhattacharya, the two-year research involved DNA testing and was published in the international science journal 'Zootaxa' on March 5.
•
Belonging to the 'Gobiformes' order and 'Butidae' family (commonly known as 'bele fish'), it feeds on small fish/shrimp and can change body color.
•
The discovery highlights the rich, yet endangered, biodiversity of Rupnarayan, emphasizing the urgent need for ecosystem protection.
