Toughest Indian Railway Terrain Electrified: Sakleshpur-Subramanya Ghat Section Ready for Electric Traction
- •The 55-kilometre Sakleshpur–Subramanya Road Ghat Section, a challenging terrain on the Hassan-Mangaluru route, was fully electrified by Mysuru Division of South Western Railway on December 28, 2025.
- •The Rs 93.55 crore project, started in December 2023, involved overhead electrification, five switching stations, and robust engineering for a 1-in-50 gradient, 258 bridges, 57 tunnels, and 108 sharp curves.
- •Electrification faced immense challenges including landslides, heavy monsoons, soil erosion, rockfalls, and transporting equipment to remote, inaccessible locations.
- •Specialised equipment, geological surveys by NIRM and Bangalore University, and pull-out tests ensured structural stability and safety in tunnels.
- •The completion enables cleaner, energy-efficient, and cost-effective electric train operations, marking a significant step towards Indian Railways' 100% electrification goal.
Why It Matters: India's challenging Sakleshpur-Subramanya Ghat Section is now fully electrified, boosting sustainable rail infrastructure.
