Tube Light vs LED: Why Old Tube Lights Flicker and Take Time to Glow
•Old fluorescent tube lights don't light up instantly; they flicker for 2-5 seconds before fully illuminating.
•The delay is due to the process of heating and exciting the gas inside the tube, which requires high voltage not directly available from household electricity.
•A 'starter' component creates the necessary high voltage surge by heating wires, emitting electrons, and then rapidly opening a switch.
•This high voltage ionizes the gas, causing it to glow and emit UV rays, which then produce white light when they hit the phosphor coating.
•Modern LED tube lights or those with electronic chokes light up instantly because they receive high voltage immediately, bypassing the starter's delay.
