First Shark Sighting in Antarctic Waters Stuns Scientists
- •Scientists recorded the first confirmed video of a large shark in Antarctica's icy waters, challenging previous assumptions.
- •The footage was captured last month by the Minderoo-UWA Deep-Sea Research Centre using a remotely operated camera near the South Shetland Islands.
- •The shark, measuring three to four metres, was observed at 490 metres below the surface in water just above freezing (1.27 degrees Celsius).
- •Researchers, including Alan Jamieson, believed sharks avoided Antarctic waters, making this a significant and unexpected discovery.
- •The sighting suggests hidden marine populations and prompts further research into deep-sea ecosystems and shark presence in polar regions.
