16-year-old Mayank Chakraborty becomes North East's first Grandmaster, India's 94th

Mayank Chakraborty, 16, is India's 94th chess Grandmaster and the first from the North East region.
•
He secured his final norm and won the Hotel Stockholm North by First Hotels Young Talents tournament in Sweden.
•
Initially inspired by PV Sindhu, he switched from badminton back to chess, becoming a two-time Under-17 national champion.
•
His mother, Monomita, a gynaecologist, sacrificed her job to support his chess career, traveling with him to tournaments.
•
Chakraborty's achievement is expected to boost chess in the North East, with his mother calling it "just the beginning."
