Koneru Humpy to Skip Fide Candidates in Cyprus Amid War Fears; Fide Refuses Venue Change

•Indian chess star Koneru Humpy plans to withdraw from the Women's Candidates 2026 in Cyprus due to escalating tensions in West Asia.
•Fide CEO Emil Sutovsky confirmed the tournament will proceed as planned from March 28 in Cyprus, despite a recent drone attack on a British air base.
•Sutovsky stated Cyprus is not directly involved in the conflict and the situation is currently calm, dismissing calls for venue change or postponement.
•Humpy criticized Fide for its "dangerous" decision, arguing that an official body should not host an event near a conflict zone.
•The Fide Candidates will decide challengers for the World Chess Championships, with R Praggnanandhaa being the sole Indian in the Open section.
