Bangladesh Election: 7 Women Win Parliament Seats, 6 from BNP

  • Seven women candidates have been elected to the Bangladesh parliament out of 78 who contested.
  • Six of the seven winning women are from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
  • The one independent winner, Barrister Rumin Farhana, was previously expelled from the BNP.
  • Many Bangladeshi parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami, did not field any female candidates.
  • Jamaat-e-Islami cited 'Islamic principles' and a grassroots selection process for not nominating women.
