Canada Mass Shooter Evaded OpenAI Ban with Second ChatGPT Account

•OpenAI revealed Canada mass shooter Jesse Van Rootselaar bypassed a ban by creating a second ChatGPT account.
•The company stated that if current enhanced protocols were in place, police would have been informed of the activity.
•Van Rootselaar's first account was banned in June 2025 for policy violation, but it did not meet the threshold for law enforcement referral at the time.
•OpenAI is strengthening detection systems to prevent evasion and prioritize identifying high-risk offenders.
•British Columbia Premier David Eby met with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, expressing "cold comfort" for victims' families despite protocol changes.
