A new study has found that China is the world's largest official creditor, channeling a total of $2.2 trillion across countries as loans or grants.

Between 2000 and 2023, China's lending or grants have flowed into 200 out of 217 countries and territories, beating even the World Bank, according to US-based AidData's recent report titled Chasing China.

China has been out-lending the World Bank by a huge margin. Between 2014 and 2023, for every $1 the World Bank handed out in loans or grants, China gave $2.20.

More surprisingly, the report discovered that top 10 of the 20 largest recipients were wealthy countries with US as the top recipient in the 24-year period studied. (Image: Reuters)

China Investigates Top Military Officials Zhang Youxia, Liu Zhenli for Discipline Violations

  • China's defence ministry announced an investigation into senior military officials Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli for suspected serious violations of discipline and law.
  • Zhang Youxia is a Politburo member and vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), while Liu Zhenli is chief of staff of the CMC Joint Staff Department.
  • Zhang, 75, is considered President Xi Jinping's closest military ally and a key figure in military modernization, with combat experience.
  • The investigation is part of a broader anti-graft crackdown initiated by Xi in 2012, which has previously targeted high-ranking military officials, including the Rocket Force and former defence ministers.
  • Foreign diplomats and analysts are closely monitoring the situation due to Zhang's proximity to Xi and the CMC's role in military modernization and China's assertive stance in disputed territories.

Why It Matters: China's anti-graft campaign targets top military brass, including Xi's close ally Zhang Youxia.
