China to Conduct Military Drills Near Taiwan After US Arms Deal, Warns Against Entry

  • China announced military exercises, including live-fire training, around Taiwan following a significant US arms package for the self-governing democracy.
  • The drills, named "Justice Mission-2025," will involve the army, navy, air force, and rocket force, starting Monday, to test joint operations capability.
  • Senior Colonel Shi Yi stated the exercises are a "stern warning against ‘Taiwan Independence’ separatist forces" and a move to safeguard China’s sovereignty.
  • The People's Liberation Army warned "any irrelevant vessel or aircraft" not to enter five blocks around Taiwan where live-fire drills begin Tuesday.
  • This marks the first major PLA drills off Taiwan since April and follows increased military intimidation since President Lai Ching-te took office in May 2024.

Why It Matters: China escalates military pressure on Taiwan with new drills after US arms deal, asserting sovereignty.
