US License for Russian Oil Drops Prices, But Iran Tensions Threaten Supply
•
Oil prices dropped after the US issued a 30-day license for countries to buy Russian oil stranded at sea, easing immediate supply concerns.
•
Brent futures fell to $99.75 a barrel, and U.S. WTI crude dropped to $94.85 following the announcement.
•
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated the license aims to stabilize global energy markets amidst the war in Iran.
•
Despite the license, Middle East risks, including Iran's threat to close the Strait of Hormuz and attacks on Iraqi tankers, are re-escalating.
•
The US also plans to release 172 million barrels from its Strategic Petroleum Reserve, coordinated with the IEA's 400 million barrel release.
