Census 2027 Goes Fully Digital with CMMS: India's First Tech-Driven Headcount
•Census 2027 will be India's first fully digital census, transforming the decennial headcount into a tech-driven operation.
•The Census Management and Monitoring System (CMMS) portal will orchestrate the exercise, replacing paper-based enumeration with handheld devices and geotagged mapping tools.
•3.2 million field functionaries will use handheld devices to capture demographic, social, and economic data, with near real-time monitoring.
•The Union Cabinet has approved Rs 11,718 crore for Census 2027, which will include caste enumeration for the first time and offer self-enumeration.
•The census will be conducted in two phases: house-listing (April-September 2026) and population enumeration (February 2027), with 33 questions in the first phase.
