India Developing 3 SMRs, Hydrogen Reactor Included: Govt Informs LS
•India is developing three types of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), including one specifically for hydrogen generation.
•The SMRs include 220 MWe Bharat Small Modular Reactor (BSMR-200), 55 MWe SMR-55, and a 5 MWth high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGCR).
•Lead units for BSMR-200 and SMR-55 will be at Tarapur, Maharashtra; HTGCR at Vizag, Andhra Pradesh.
•Development costs: BSMR-200 (Rs 5,960 crore), SMR-55 (Rs 7,000 crore for two units), and HTGCR (Rs 320 crore).
•BSMR-200 is a joint design by Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), with construction estimated at 60-72 months.
