Iran Appoints Third Member to Leadership Council Amidst Succession Plans

•Iran names 66-year-old cleric Ayatollah Ali Reza Arafi to its three-member leadership council.
•The council will govern the country until a new supreme leader is selected.
•Arafi previously served on the Guardian Council and the Assembly of Experts, which chooses the next leader.
•He was appointed to the Guardian Council in 2019 by the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
•Arafi joins President Masoud Pezeshkian and judiciary head Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejehei on the council.
