Jan Vishwas Bill: New Penalties Under Slums Act Proposed by Centre
•
The Centre has proposed new penalty provisions for The Slum Areas (Improvement and Clearance) Act, 1956.
•
Offenses will now attract a penalty of up to Rs 10,000 for each instance of non-compliance, replacing the previous imprisonment or Rs 1,000 fine.
•
Continuing violations will incur an additional penalty of Rs 1,000 per day, capped at Rs 1 lakh.
•
These amendments are part of the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2026, introduced by Jitin Prasada.
•
The Bill aims to amend 79 central acts, decriminalizing 717 provisions to foster ease of doing business and ease of living.
