Myanmar Hit by Multiple Earthquakes; Sagaing Fault Poses Major Risk

  • Myanmar experienced a 3.6 magnitude earthquake on Monday, January 26, at a depth of 112 km, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
  • Earlier, on Sunday night, a 3.9 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar at a depth of 93 km.
  • Two additional earthquakes of magnitudes 3.5 and 3.6 occurred on Sunday, just 14 minutes apart, at depths of 30 km and 60 km respectively.
  • Myanmar is highly susceptible to earthquakes and tsunamis due to its location between four tectonic plates: Indian, Eurasian, Sunda, and Burma plates.
  • The Sagaing Fault, a 1,400-kilometre transform fault, significantly increases seismic hazard for densely populated areas like Sagaing, Mandalay, Bago, and Yangon.

Why It Matters: Myanmar faces high seismic risk from multiple tectonic plates and the active Sagaing Fault.
