Myanmar Hit by Three Earthquakes in Two Days; Vulnerability to Seismic Activity Highlighted

  • Myanmar experienced two earthquakes of magnitudes 3.5 and 3.6 within 14 minutes on January 25, 2026, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).
  • These tremors occurred at depths of 30km and 60km respectively, following a 3.4 magnitude earthquake on January 24, 2026.
  • Myanmar is highly susceptible to earthquakes and tsunamis due to its location at the convergence of four tectonic plates: Indian, Eurasian, Sunda, and Burma plates.
  • The Sagaing Fault, a 1,400-kilometre transform fault, significantly increases seismic risk for densely populated regions like Sagaing, Mandalay, Bago, and Yangon.
  • Past seismic events, such as the 1903 Bago earthquake (magnitude 7.0) which also affected Yangon, underscore the ongoing threat to the country.

Why It Matters: Myanmar faces significant seismic risks due to its tectonic plate location, experiencing multiple recent earthquakes.
