Nanded aims for 1 lakh 'jaltaras' to recharge groundwater

• Nanded district plans to construct one lakh 'jaltaras' to harvest monsoon runoff.
• District Collector Rahul Kardile announced the initiative on World Soil Day, inaugurating the 'Jaltara Shramdaan' drive.
• The 'jaltara' program aims to increase groundwater levels, reduce soil erosion, improve soil structure, and enhance crop productivity.
• MGNREGA Department and Bharat Rural Livelihoods Foundation are jointly implementing a High Impact Mega Watershed Project to support this mission.
• A 'jaltara' is a 5x5x6 ft pit filled with stones, designed to allow approximately 3.6 lakh litres of water to seep into the ground.
