Power Sector Legacy Dues Plummet to Rs 4,109 Cr in February

• Legacy dues in the power sector have significantly reduced from Rs 1,40,000 crore in June 2022 to Rs 4,109 crore by February.
• The government's Electricity (Late Payment Surcharge and Related Matters) Rules, 2022, notified on June 3, 2022, facilitated this reduction.
• Under these rules, all dues up to June 3, 2022, were rescheduled into Equated Monthly Instalments (EMIs) starting August 2022.
• Thirteen states reported arrears totaling Rs 1,39,947 crore as of June 3, 2022, which were then rescheduled.
• As of February 10, 2026, 43 EMIs have been paid, including pre-payments, bringing outstanding legacy dues down to Rs 4,109 crore.
