US launches trade probe into 16 economies over 'excess capacity', India included
•The United States Trade Representative (USTR) initiated a sweeping investigation into manufacturing practices in 16 economies, including India.
•The probe targets 'structural excess capacity' that could distort global trade, conducted under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.
•Targeted economies include China, EU, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Mexico, Taiwan, Singapore, Switzerland, Norway, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, Bangladesh, and India.
•The US argues that partners' manufacturing capacity is 'untethered from market incentives of domestic and global demand,' leading to overproduction and trade surpluses.
•Possible responses include tariffs, restrictions on services, or negotiated commitments; a separate Section 301 investigation into forced labor imports is also planned.
